DAKILA receives Human Rights Tulip Award

DAKILA, an organization composed of artists, activists, development workers, educators, entrepreneurs, designers, professionals, and students all advocating for human rights and social transformation in the Philippines, was awarded the 2022 Human Rights Tulip Award from the Embassy of the Netherlands on December 9. The Human Rights Tulip is an annual award of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dutch government to support human rights defenders in their work advancing and protecting human rights around the world while also highlighting relevant issues. Each year since 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has awarded the Human Rights Tulip to an outstanding human rights defender or human rights organization to support their work.

DAKILA prides itself as a movement for modern heroism that envisions a nation of heroes where every sector of the society is socially conscious and is provided the avenue to contribute for social change. They have done this in the past through programs that bridge the arts and academe towards social action and political awareness. Through film, spoken word, new media, and visual art, DAKILA understands the role of storytelling through art and activism in communicating the shared language of freedom and human rights. This reach has allowed them to work with many social leaders of the youth, cultural minorities, and other sectors in need of larger visibility.

The Embassy of the Netherlands acknowledges how the work of human rights defenders like DAKILA are often executed under difficult circumstances, with several of their proponents or partners often red-tagged, threatened, or jailed in their attempt to expose human rights violations and stand for justice. The Human Rights Tulip Award recognizes the courage that comes from this movement and awards DAKILA with a cash incentive and international visibility to help them continue and expand their human rights efforts.
