FNF Prague at German Embassy's Day of Open Doors

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the 1989 events at the German Embassy in Prague, which were of fundamental importance for European history and the reunification of the then divided German state.
On 30 September 1989, the then West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher announced from the balcony of the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague to thousands of refugees from the GDR that they would be allowed to travel to the West. "We have come to you to tell you that today you will be able to..." - the end of what is probably the most famous unfinished sentence in modern German history died away in the cheers of more than four thousand people who had been waiting in the embassy garden for weeks for their journey to freedom. A few weeks later, on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. As Rudolf Seiters, then head of the Chancellery of the Federal Chancellor, who was present at the event with Genscher, said, "The first stone of the Berlin Wall was broken in Prague."

On 30 September 2024, the German Embassy in Prague wants to commemorate these historic moments with a celebration and open day called "Fest der Freiheit". At the same time, it will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
