Event Feedback: Participation of Women in Strengthening the Democratic Process

Female Forward 2024

The journey of women in leadership is a testament to resilience and inspiration, illuminating the paths of those whose voices often remain unheard in the struggle for basic human rights. Our recent study tour was a remarkable opportunity to connect with influential women — politicians, former military leaders, entrepreneurs, and media figures — who generously shared their experiences and challenges.

On our first evening, we gathered for dinner with Ms. Elena Gerasimowa, a labour law and labour standards specialist from the International Labour Organisation (ILO). We discussed about these topics especially during pregnancy and the accompanying fears of job security, some ongoing conflicts about job opportunities and the causes around the world.

Her passion for her work and her impressive achievements sparked a vibrant discussion, leaving us all feeling inspired and motivated to make a difference not only in our lives but within the communities where we live.

The following day, we engaged with a former army officer and a personality from the media background who has worked with politicians for many years. They bravely spoke about the delicate balance between career aspirations and family responsibilities. Their stories illuminated the unique challenges women face.

Our lunch discussion with the Austrian Ambassador Katharina Wieser was equally enlightening. She recounted her extraordinary journey as a diplomat, of her role, which involved constant travel and the ability to adapt to new environments. Her insights provided a fascinating glimpse into a career defined by adventure and commitment.

Later, we visited the Delhi Assembly, where we met women politicians whose inspiring life stories showcased the strength and determination needed to thrive in leadership positions. Their narratives were powerful reminders of the resilience required to overcome obstacles.

Our second day took us to Agra, where we connected with women entrepreneurs, each sharing their unique paths to success. The day culminated in a visit to the breathtaking Taj Mahal, a symbol of enduring strength and beauty, much like the women we had met. And last my friend Dheden and I got the opportunity to talk about the Tibet cause and share our unheard stories as Tibetans in exile. I felt very grateful for the time and opportunity.

Overall, this study tour was a transformative experience, filled with motivating stories and lessons on overcoming challenges in the pursuit of our dreams. Each encounter reinforced our commitment to uplift and empower one another, reminding us that together, we can create a brighter future.
