FNF supports a series of parliamentary discussions for Pyidaungsu Hluttaw

A series of parliamentary discussions to empower MPs from Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Amyotha Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw) in their policymaking were hosted by FNF Myanmar, in partnership with Panna Institute in Nay Pyi Taw on October 28 and November 11 respectively.

The topics are 1. Empowering local governance 2. Public participation and 3. Regional Economic Development.

The purposes of these discussions aim to strengthen the relationship between young scholars and the parliamentarians, to share the international experiences of young scholars with the parliamentarians, and to discuss challenges and possible best practices, which young scholars have learned while studying, living and working abroad.

The first series, “Empowering Local Governance”, was hosted on 28 October 2017 at Zabu Thiri hotel in Nay Pyi Taw. U Ti Khun Myat, the chairperson of Joint Coordination Committee, attended the event and gave an opening remark. The total of 59 participants, including heads, secretaries and members from different committees of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, participated in the first discussion.    

U Htet Min Lwin and Daw Kyi Pyar Chit Saw acted as resource young scholars and discussed the issue with the help of the moderator, Dr. Thein Than Win.

On November 11 2017, FNF Myanmar, again in partnership with Panna Institute, hosted two more discussion series, ‘Public Participation’  and ‘Regional Economic Development’, at Zabu Thiri hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.

45 parliamentarians  from different committees attended the discussion. Daw Saint Yi Htet and U Kaung Myat Htut led the discussion, presenting different methods to develop state-society relations. Dr. Tin Htoo Naing and U Aung Tun were the resource scholars to share the current status of regional economic development in Myanmar and went into an intense discussion over how to improve the existing conditions.

“Myanmar’s economy is expected to develop greatly until 2020 according to World Bank and other international statistics,” Dr. Tin Htoo Naing said. “However, this is just a prediction. Myanmar has to work hard to turn these expectations into a reality.”

FNF Myanmar will continue organizing these kinds of discussions next year, bringing more pragmatic topics to support the parliamentarians in their policymaking.
