Fritz Kuermayr

Fritz Kuermayr joined the Madrid office of Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom as an Intern in September 2022 through the program “Austrian service abroad”. He is part of the Austrian liberal movement and has held various positions within it. After his Internship in Spain, he will continue his work for the FNF in Hanoi, Vietnam. He speaks fluent German and English, basic French and is currently learning Spanish.

Fritz Kuermayr, an Austrian student, had a chance to serve abroad as an intern at the project locations of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Madrid (Spain) and Hanoi (Vietnam), from September 2022 to July 2023. Here he shares some thoughts upon concluding his journey as he gained valuable experiences and memories.

Vietnam´s GenZ: Family ties trump individualism
With about 13 million people, the GenZ, i.e. people born between 1997 and 2012, makes up about 19% of Vietnam's population. Globally, there are general trends within this age cohort - from mindset and the use of social media to the affinity to technology. One of the core values attributed to this generation worldwide is their drive for individuality. However, this does not seem to hold up in Vietnam.

Taking advantage of opportunities in the Mediterranean region
The “Autumn Reception“ of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Madrid this year focused on the opportunities offered by the current challenges. Long-term problems, such as the shortage of skilled workers, were addressed and the resulting opportunities, in the form of an ambitious labour market, but also obligations, exemplified by the lifting of every potential of young talent, regardless of socio-economic background - were explained. The "Impulse Talks" format in which the event took place allowed the topics to be examined from various perspectives.
