19 - Self-Responsibility
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.
- The principle of self-responsibility is based on the liberal ideal of a responsible, self-determined person, as described by John Stuart Mill, for example, as an "active citizen".
- This principle does not imply a refusal to assume responsibility for others (→ solidarity). However, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, social policy should essentially refer to help for self-help and not prevent incentives for all individuals to act as independently as possible.

This 1990's Christmas comedy is a true classic and it contains everything you want to see in a good movie: fun, action, excitement and a good dose of Christmassy and heart-warming emotions. When Kevin suddenly finds himself without his family, he can finally do and let go of all the things that were otherwise constantly forbidden to him or that his family would not have thought him capable of. However, Kevin does not only grow with the challenges, he also manages to defend himself against the "Wet Bandits" and even helps his next-door neighbour, "Old Man" Marley. "Home Alone" is a nice reminder of all the things we are capable of doing on our own, being independent and taking responsibility for our actions - but also to love and cherish our family and loved ones.
