Countdown to Christmas
20 - Tolerance
- One of the core values of liberalism and a strong attitude in liberals.
- Tolerance is the glue in our societies that enables individuals to live together non-violently, tolerance also allows to observe perceptions, solutions and lifestyles in others which enables growth and progress.
- For liberals tolerance goes together with respect for the uniqueness of individuals and human dignity.
- Therefore, liberals do not tolerate the intolerant – as this would would ultimately allow the intolerant to supress the tolerant, destroy the fabric of societies and deprive human beings of their dignity.
Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's poem "Nathan the Wise" (1779) is for anyone who wants to ponder on religion and peace beyond the traditional Christmas story. The plot is set during the third crusade in Jerusalem and mainly about religious tolerance – with a few plot twists. It is also about the human quest for absolute truth and a vision of mankind living together peacefully. If you have time, check out the podcast mentioned in the resource section.
