José María Peredo Pombo is Professor of International Communication and Politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication at the European University of Madrid. Social and Communication Sciences at the Universidad Europea de Madrid, where he has been developing his teaching and research career for 30 years. He is currently Vice Dean of Communication and Marketing and Director of the Chair of Euro-Atlantic Security Culture. He collaborates with the Institute of Strategic Studies of the CESEDEN (Ministry of Defence) and is a researcher in the areas of International Political Communication; Security; US Foreign Policy; and Spanish Cooperation and Foreign Policy. His latest research has focused on the study of elections in the United States and the role of democracy in shaping the international order. He collaborates with specialised magazines (Atalayar, Diplomacia) and in the general media (RTVE, Diario Montañés, Mediaset, Cadena COPE).

Europe without the Mediterranean

A few days before the start of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) summit in Vilnius, the incessant arrival of boats in Lampedusa once again overwhelmed the capacity of the reception centres, where more than 2,000 migrants were concentrated after having survived the Mediterranean. Focused on the war in Ukraine, the Alliance has been seemingly more detached from the problems of the so-called southern flank. Although European and American leaders are well aware that Euro-Atlantic security is increasingly complex in today's changing international order.
