Sisters in Islam of Malaysia faces an unending challenge in promoting and advocating progressive Islamic views.  On this path, Sisters In Islam organized a public forum entitled “Perkembangan Islam di Malaysia: Dari Era Sanggul ke Era Hijab” (The Development of Islam in Malaysia: From The Era of the Malay Hairbun to The Hijab Era) on 20th May 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.

The forum is one of SIS’s efforts in creating more platforms for a comprehensive discourse on Malaysia’s growth, emphasizing the growing influence of conservative Islam on our political landscape, our economy and our multi-racial, multi-faceted society.

The forum also included a photo exhibition and a video screening, highlighting various comments and hopes from Malaysian of all race and ages for Malaysia. Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Yunus, a former Court of Appeal judge, gave his comments on RUU355 and urged all Malaysians to defend Malaysia as a secular country as the amendments ignored the principle of proportional justice in criminal law. Among the list of panelists for the forum are Zainah Anwar, Dr. Mohd Faizal Musa, Tan Beng Hui  and Azrul Azwar
Ahmad Tajudin who shared their opinions and views on gender perspectives and personal experiences as a woman activist, historical context of Islam and the effects of Islamization from political and economic views respectively.
