Malaysiakini, Malaysia´s leading Online-Media and a partner of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), has been shortlisted thrice for the annual Global Editors Network (GEN) Data Journalism Awards 2018. FNF has been a partner of Malaysiakini since it was founded.

Malaysiakini´s online tool "Undi Power" is shortlisted for the “News Data App of the Year Award” alongside the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and three others for creating the “best data journalism application”. "Undi Power", also called "Vote Power", is an interactive online tool that allows users to find out how powerful their vote is in Malaysia´s upcoming election on May 9th. Funded by the FNF, the tool makes it possible for voters to compare the weight of their votes to the weight of the votes in other parliamentary constituencies. "Undi Power" illustrates and proves gerrymandering. Malaysian elections are rigged by gerrymandering, which benefits the government coalition.

In the 2013 General Elections, the government coalition only won 47% of the popular vote, but took 60% of the parliamentary seats. The opposition coalition won 51% of the popular vote, but only took 40% of the parliamentary seats. How the rigged system works, is explained by "Undi Power". At the upcoming GEN Data Journalism Awards, the tool is also shortlisted for the Public Choice Award, where members of the public can vote for their favourite.

Congratulations, Malaysiakini!
