Tax and regulatory policies: Impacting how Malaysians do Business

On 13 July 2017, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) held a seminar titled “Tax and regulatory policies: Impacting how Malaysians do Business”, took place at Jalan Cenderamulia, Tasik Perdana, Kuala Lumpur.
The seminar was moderated by Tricia Yeoh, Chief Operating Officer of IDEAS. There were 4 speakers coming from the distinguished background, i.e Aurelia Silva, Executive Director of British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, Amarjeet Singh from Ernst and Young, Dr. Carmelo Ferlito, Senior Fellow at IDEAS and Sim Choo Keng, Founder and Chief Executive of Sim Leisure Consultants Sdn Bhd.

The main discussion was as to how taxes and governments regulation incur inevitable costs on businesses. These have been implemented without sufficient consultation with Business Community. Business community in Malaysia now is facing tax burden which do not benefit their business even historically Malaysia has a pro-business environment and is the second most attractive country to do business in the region after Singapore.

Amarjeet Singh from Ernst and Young found that Multinational Companies could have the option to move their businesses to other countries in the region if the tax system becomes more stifling.
