Mona Itani is an assistant professor of entrepreneurship at the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut in Beirut, Lebanon. She founded Riyada for Social Innovation SAL and is the co-founder of Shabab Lab (shabablab.com). Her work primarily contributes to the capacity building of youth in social innovation and entrepreneurship, including political innovation through hackathons, in-person training programs, incubation cycles and e-learning for high school students.

The relationship between politics and innovation is complex and intertwined, according to a recent visit to Berlin and Brussels. Policymakers determine to what extent and how well innovation is embraced at the country level, with Estonia serving as a prime example of digital citizen services that have elevated governmental processes. The willingness of governments to adopt technologies and innovative processes is crucial. Politics also determines the future of innovation through regulation, such as the debate around the AI Act in the EU. Despite complexities facing policymakers, Europe is pushing for a more citizen- and planet-centric economy with significant momentum in social innovation.
