Economic Prosperity in Asia: Dealing with Economic Nationalism

Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Korea office (FNF) and the Economic Freedom Network Asia (EFN) have co-organized a session entitled “Economic Prosperity in Asia: Dealing with Economic Nationalism” during the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2013, which took place in Jeju Island from May 29 to 31.

The Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity is one of the Asia’s major international comprehensive forums where political, business, cultural and academic leaders gather together in Jeju to exchange opinions and to discuss the ideas for the multilateral cooperation for common peace and prosperity in the region, since 2001. FNF joined the forum 2013 for the first time as one of co-sponsors.

The FNF session was organized with a goal to broaden the public policy debate on the merits of free economy and limited governments, against the rise of economic nationalism which usually comes out when the economies all over the world enter a recession.  It aimed to provide a platform for political dialogue and academic exchange, as well as to deepen participants’ knowledge of economic nationalism and liberalism, their relation to free trade and markets, the creation of wealth, and a free society in general. The session also intended to develop mechanisms to fend off the various economic national policies, hoping that a set of economic freedom arguments and messages will be made known to the participants and applied.

The session was attended by about seventy participants and it was one of the few sessions where simultaneous English-Korean-Japanese translation was provided. Below is the rapporteur report submitted to the forum Secretariat.
