German Historian Stefan Wolle to talks about German Reunification

German Historian Stefan Wolle visits South Korea to talk about German Reunification

In early September, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Korea (FNF) had the chance to host a special guest. Dr. Stefan Wolle, Research Director at Berlin's GDR Museum visited South Korea for one week to attend conferences, give lectures and presentations for our local partner organizations and meet officials from the German embassy.

As one of the most renowned German historians on German division and the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and as a former East German citizen himself, Mr. Wolle talked about a wide range of topics including the GDR Museum's approach to deal with life in former East Germany, West Germany's

East policy, the omnipresent surveillance by the East German secret police (Stasi) but also about the very personal experiences he made under the East German dictatorship.

In talks with representatives of partner organizations like ASAN Institute, Jeju Peace Institute, the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (Kyungnam University) and the Youth Alliance for the Future of Korea, Mr. Wolle often discussed the significance of  the unique historic experience of German Reunification for a future unification process of both Koreas.

He also introduced the GDR Museum in a presentation held at Goethe Institute. Interest of our Korean partners in these issues as well as in the GDR Museum itself was very high and led to a fruitful German-Korean exchange.
