Background: Vietnam - Occupy or spread - China gets new territory in the South China Sea

The conflict simmering in the region seems far from a peaceful resolution. Neither a multilateral agreement between China and the ASEAN states nor the Philippine complaint before the International Court of Justice in The Hague promise a quick solution. Instead, a military buildup and intensified alliance policy by all parties can be observed.
