Sustainable and Inclusive Cities
On Thursday, Yereliz, the Turkish Association for Local Monitoring, Research, and Implementation, in collaboration with FNF, hosted a launch event to present the latest report, “Urban Monitoring Framework – Good Practices Using the SDG Cities Methodology”. This initiative focuses on promoting the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Türkiye.
Founded in 2017 by human rights activists, Yereliz is dedicated to fostering sustainable, participatory, and inclusive cities. At the core of its mission are human rights and climate justice, advanced through partnerships with local administrations and civil society organizations. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation provides critical support through its expertise and network.
The report features over 50 exemplary local SDG initiatives from 2019 to 2024. It particularly emphasizes SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and highlights projects that address polarization and promote social cohesion. These initiatives include innovative approaches to climate adaptation, strengthening local democracy, and empowering disadvantaged groups.
During the launch, key examples of innovative local government projects that foster inclusivity, sustainability, and community well-being were presented and participants, mainly from local goverments and NGOs, were invited to exchange ideas on actionable solutions for a better future.
The project aims to advance sustainable development at the local level while aligning global goals with local needs. "We want to demonstrate that local solutions are essential building blocks for a fairer and more sustainable world," said a Yereliz representative.
This event marks an important step in highlighting the role of local initiatives in achieving a global agenda. The report serves as inspiration and a guide for municipalities and NGOs in Türkiye to implement sustainable and human-rights-based practices.
