Countdown to Christmas
11 - Artificial Intelligence (AI)

IAF - 11
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence by machines, enabling them to learn, reason, and solve problems. It uses algorithms and data to perform tasks that typically require human cognition, such as language understanding, image recognition, and decision-making. AI continuously improves over time through training and adaption.
  • AI is a significant innovation because it enhances efficiency, automates complex processes, and drives advancements across industries like healthcare, finance, and transportation. It empowers humans to solve problems at unprecedented scales, transforming how we live and work. Its potential to address global challenges, from climate change to disease management, makes it a revolutionary force to progress.

Inventors

  • Alan Turing (1950) is often called the “Father of AI”, he proposed the concept of machines capable of simulating human intelligence and introduced the “Turing Test”

  • AI has evolved significantly due to collaborative efforts in mathematics, computer science, and neuroscience over the decades.

  • OpenAI (e.g. ChatGPT) was founded on December 11, 2025 (9 years ago, yaihhh, happy birthday!). It was established by a group of tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockmann, Wojciech Zaremba, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and others, with the mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.

AI was designed to benefit humanity as a whole, embodying the spirit of giving. Its applications - whether in healthcare, education, or entertainment - aim to make life better for everyone. Similarly Christmas is abouth sharing gifts and joy with loved ones and even strangers, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care.

What Is an AI Anyway? | Mustafa Suleyman | TED

"When it comes to artificial intelligence, what are we actually creating? Even those closest to its development are struggling to describe exactly where things are headed, says Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, one of the primary architects of the AI models many of us use today. He offers an honest and compelling new vision for the future of AI, proposing an unignorable metaphor — a new digital species — to focus attention on this extraordinary moment. (Followed by a Q&A with head of TED Chris Anderson)."
