Countdown to Christmas
22 - Matches

  • Small, simple, and revolutionary—matches are one of humanity's most underrated inventions. These tiny sticks have ignited countless fires, from cozy hearths to campfire adventures, and played a pivotal role in human progress. First patented in the 19th century, matches provided a portable, easy way to control fire, empowering people to cook food, stay warm, and light the way in darkness.

  • Modern safety matches, with their friction-activated tips, are a marvel of engineering and chemistry. Yet, they also symbolize the delicate balance between human ingenuity and nature's raw power—a single strike can bring light or destruction.

  • In an age dominated by electric lighters and gas stoves, matches remind us of the simplicity and brilliance of early innovation. They hold a poetic charm: a brief flare, a warm glow, and then they're gone, but their impact lingers long after.

Inventors

The invention of matches evolved over centuries through contributions from several inventors. Robert Boyle first explored friction-based ignition in 1680, but the first practical match was created by John Walker in 1826. Walker's friction matches, though effective, were improved in 1830 by Charles Sauria, who replaced antimony sulfide with white phosphorus, though it posed health risks.

In 1844, Gustaf Erik Pasch invented safety matches using red phosphorus, making them safer. Johan Edvard Lundström later commercialized this design, cementing Sweden's role in match production. Together, these innovations transformed matches into a safe and essential household tool.

Matches and Christmas share a unique connection—a spark of warmth, light, and togetherness in the coldest, darkest months. The gentle glow of a lit match often marks the beginning of cherished holiday moments: lighting candles on an Advent wreath, the flickering flames of a fireplace, or the warm glow of a Christmas tree. But matches also remind us of a timeless holiday tale: Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl. This poignant story, centered around hope and human kindness, highlights the spirit of Christmas—empathy, generosity, and the light we can bring to others’ lives.

This holiday season, let the humble match inspire you. Whether igniting festive candles or sharing warmth with loved ones, its spark is a symbol of the joy and light we can bring into the world. After all, even the smallest flame can shine brightly in the darkest winter night.

Ivar Kreuger, the Match King fraud

"Ivar Kreuger was hailed as Europe's savior throughout the 1920s and He was regarded as the country's best con artist a month after his passing in 1932. Crazy transformation! Isn’t it? John Kenneth Galbraith referred to Ivar Kreuger as the Leonardo of the trade of boiler-room operators, brokers of stocks in made-up Canadian mines, and mutual-fund managers with an unrestrained sense of brilliance and imagination. But he later became a well-known fraudster. Wanna know about him? Then stay tuned till the end."
