Yara Assi : Legal Intern
Yara Assi
My name is Yara Assi. I graduated from Saint Joseph University with a bachelor’s degree in Law and a master’s degree in Private Law. I currently work as a legal intern, looking to continue my studies in Arbitration and Mediation this fall in Quebec, Canada.
Since my early years, I have been driven by the idea of serving my community. As a teenager I volunteered with the Lebanese Red Cross Youth department– Saida, and then joined Rotaract Club of Saida, an organization that aims to better the living situation on a community level. Pursuing a degree in Law sensitized me on a professional level when it comes to Human Rights matters. Therefore, I decided to join the USJ Legal Clinic, where we gave the domestic workers in Lebanon legal advice.
What always motivates me is having a positive impact in the world. In these unfortunate circumstances, it is radically important we stick together and show the good side of humanity. The joy of giving back is the fuel for the long drive that awaits you.
The Model Youth Parliament visiting program was one of the best experiences. It changed me on a personal and professional level. I had the opportunity to learn about Germany's political system, participated in several discussions and attended workshops related to democracy, liberalism, and parliamentary work. I got the chance to be introduced to the German culture and made lifelong friendships. The Model Youth Parliament program was a very challenging experience that I am grateful for. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and contributed to my character development. During the visiting program, we participated in a workshop about being in other people's shoes. This workshop that was given by the Refugees’ Voices Tour in Berlin, taught me that I should always consider different perspectives before taking any decision and never underestimate people's personal experiences.
