Forum on Parliamentary Select Committee: Role of Institutional Reform

On 11 September 2019, Institute for Leadership and Development Studies (LEAD) has organized a forum titled ‘Parliamentary Select Committee: Role of Institutional Reform’ at Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH).

Institutional reform is an important factor in ensuring good governance. One of the most important institutions in Malaysia is the parliament. The change in government administration following the 14th General Election saw the setting up of six new Parliamentary Select Committees based on the 16th Promise: Restoring Parliamentary Institutions.

Committees that were established are Consideration of Bills Committee, the Budget Committee, the Rights and Gender Equality Committee, the Major Public Appointments Committee, the Defense and Home Affairs Committee, and the Federal State Relations Committee. However, the effectiveness of the committee is still questionable because of its limited jurisdiction.

The issues were successfully address by panelists who are YB Dr Hasan Bahrom, Member of Parliament for Tampin constituency, Aira Azhari, Executive – Research Division of Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), and Tarmizi Anuwar, Research Manager of LEAD. The forum was moderated by Ms. Zati Hanani, from Institute for Research & Development of Policy (IRDP) Malaysia.
