Launch of the 2018 Telenisa Statistics and Findings
In conjunction with International Women's Day on 8 March, Sisters in Islam (SIS) launched its Telenisa Statistics and Findings for the year 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.
The annual publication of our Telenisa statistics and findings reflects SIS’ commitment to transparency and integrity to those who support their work. Over the years, SIS’ works have impacted the lives of thousands of their clients in enabling them to gain greater awareness and access to justice within the boundaries of Syariah Laws.
According to the statistics from the Telenisa Legal Clinic, the number of legal enquiries on polygamy has risen sharply. Last year, there were 176 polygamy cases recorded by the legal clinic. This is an increase of 66% compared to 106 cases in 2017. Whereas in 2016, the clinic handled 75 cases.
Sisters in Islam is a non-governmental organisation working towards advancing the rights of women in Malaysia. They work within the frameworks of Islam, universal principles of human rights, constitutional guarantees and lived realities and experiences of women. Through their free Telenisa Legal Clinic, they equip thousands of women with the awareness and access they need in claiming their rights under the Muslim Family Laws. SIS’ advocacy and outreach programmes create critical conversation and action hubs in order to enable voices for change to be heard.
