"Save Citizen's Rights: Freedom or Security” by Gerhart Baum
Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a former Minister of Justice of Germany and Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Board member, spoke at the roundtable "Violence in the Modern World: a Test of Human and Civil Rights" at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia. At the event the book "Save Citizen's Rights: Freedom or Security. Polemic Notes” by Gerhart Baum, a former Federal Minister of the Interior of Germany, was discussed. Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger wrote the foreword to the book’s Russian edition.
The roundtable was opened by Yevgeniy Yasin, Scientific Director of the Higher School of Economics and President of the Liberal Mission Foundation. Mr Yasin mentioned that he is now a member of the Public Council on Human Rights under the President of Russia. He also spoke of the importance of Baum’s book. When the Friedrich Naumann Foundation proposed that the Liberal Mission Foundation translate and publish in Russian Gerhart Baum’s work, Yevgeniy Yasin, once he had read its text, immediately agreed.
It was also not difficult to find an author for the foreword to the Russian edition. Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger is well known to the Russian public. Also she has worked with Gerhart Baum for a long time and knows his position on human rights.
As a Federal Minister of the Interior, Gerhart Baum himself faced the problem of finding a balance between the security of citizens and the Principal Law on freedom and the rights of citizens.
As she wrote in the foreword to Gerhart Baum’s book, at the event Mrs Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger shared at her view of why the book should be trusted: "While fulfilling his duties, its author did not share the universal blind faith in safety. Through his activities, he gives all of us strength and serves as an example of a politician and a lawyer acting for the basic values of democracy, human rights and freedoms. "
Recently, Ms Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger has served as the Minister of Justice and was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens has always been central to her work. She is grateful to Gerhart Baum for his polemical notes, because by writing this book he has given the civil rights the publicity they truly deserve.
"This book educates, excites, offers arguments and provides basic knowledge for a convincing policy to promote human rights", shared Ms Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger in her foreword to the book. The debate at the Higher School of Economics has confirmed it.
