The North America Regional Office in Washington, D.C. is composed of two pillar programs. The Transatlantic Dialogue Program fosters political dialogue among political, business, scientific and cultural multipliers from the US, Canada and Germany and develops innovative liberal approaches and solutions to transatlantic issues. The World Order and Globalization Hub fosters dialogue among political, business and scientific multipliers by encouraging increased mutual understanding within the global economic landscape. Both initiatives seek to facilitate a transfer of knowledge among experts in order to make a worldwide contribution to social and economic progress.

The relationship between Germany and the United States is one of the most significant to have emerged out of the post-war order. Against this backdrop, the Trump administration’s approach to transatlantic relations came as a shock to many on the German side. But Donald Trump’s criticisms of the transatlantic partnership were not a unique product of idiosyncratic personal views; they represented an extension of an increasingly significant line of thought in American politics, now not uncommon among Republicans nor Democrats.

Campaigning, Elections, and Voting: a Plethora of Policies
The Washington Office hosted a distinguished delegation of campaign experts in September. While discussions centered heavily on the Harris v. Trump debate and speculations on the outcome in November, key policies related to campaigning also shaped conversations of the week. Notable topics and policies the group touched upon were: voter registration, mail-in ballot policies, voter ID laws, early voting, campaign finance regulation, and the role of the Electoral College.

Study Tour: Campaigning for Democracy
The World Order and Globalization Hub welcomed its twenty-second delegation in September, consisting of nine professionals in politics. The delegation comprised of participants representing Chile, Costa Rica, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, India, Lebanon, Slovakia, and Thailand. The delegates included Chiefs of Staff, Advisors, Party Leaders, Campaign Managers, Communications Experts, and Elected Officials. The eight-day study tour focused on campaigning and elections in the context of democracy, and took place in Washington, D.C., Lansing, Michigan and Detroit, Michigan.

With the start of the NATO summit on July 9, the 75th anniversary of the alliance is coming into focus. A new survey by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, conducted by the polling institute dimap, shows clear majorities in favor of the transatlantic military alliance in the USA and Germany. The survey also reveals differentiated views on threat perception and the future of the alliance.

A New Age of Women in Politics Policy Takeaways
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s Washington, D.C. office hosted a distinguished international delegation of twelve female professionals working in politics, from May 4th – May 11th, 2024 in Washington, D.C. and Denver, Colorado. The delegation met with experts across various political women’s institutions, non-profit organizations, political NGOs, legislative offices and more specifically with The World Bank Group, researchers, journalists, and academics.

In that time, the participants met with a wide variety of professionals: ranging from political NGOs, non-partisan non-profit organizations, academics, political women’s institutions, policy advisors, The World Bank Group, legislative offices, journalists, and researchers.
