The Impact of US and China Green Protectionism on Global South Countries
The Impact of US and China Green Protectionism on Global South Countries.
In collaboration with the Global South in the World Order Project at The Stimson Center in Washington, DC, the center has written a detailed paper for us on the topic of "Great Power Competition and Green Protectionism: The Impact of the US-China Trade War on Global South Countries".
Following the release of this paper, we had the opportunity to further discuss the topic in a virtual roundtable. The panel included Aude Darnal, Research Analyst and Project Manager The Global South in the World Order at The Stimson Center, Alicia Nichols, International Trade Specialist at Ignis Caribbean Consulting Inc., Kudakwashe Manjonjo, Just Transition Associate and Lead on Critical Minerals-Green Industrialization at Power Shift Africa and Lethabo Sithole, Managing Director at Amila Africa.
The ongoing great power competition between the U.S. and China has led to a shift in global trade dynamics, particularly through green protectionist measures. U.S. policies, intended to foster domestic green industries and reduce reliance on Chinese imports, are having significant implications for the economies of Global South countries. As nations in regions like Africa and the Caribbean navigate these changes, they are confronted with restricted access to international markets and increased economic inequality. These challenges highlight the need for careful policy considerations to ensure that Global South countries can fully engage in and benefit from the green transition, while also securing their place in the global economy. The paper, written by Stimson, delves into how these dynamics affect Global South countries and provides valuable insights into the opportunities and risks presented by these trade shifts.
