Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of the January 14 presidential elections in Uganda for a sixth term in office with the Electoral Commission stating he had won with 58% of the vote. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine stated publicly that the elections were corrupt and his supporters were harassed. Together with several opposition candidates, Bobi Wine called for national defiance of Museveni’s government - also claiming ballot box stuffing during the elections. He was soon placed under house arrest by the government for nearly two weeks. These acts only increased international support for the opposition with international agencies slamming the ban on international observers, the increased human rights violations and deliberate attempts to limit free speech through Internet shutdowns.

A few months after the elections, Bobi Wine says he's disappointed that the international community continues to work with President Yoweri Museveni. Wine accuses the incumbent of ruling with an iron fist with continued violations of human rights. He says even though the United States and Europe recognised the atrocities committed by Museveni's administration - Uganda still enjoys financial and even military support.

The devious acts of Museveni’s government to further limit free speech and to further limit any consequences to the increasing human rights violations have recently been escalated with the act of suspending over 50 NGO’s and rights groups.

Bobi Wine is in South Africa at the invitation of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. Members of the media were invited to a press briefing and Q & A session with Bobi Wine to reflect on Uganda's January 2021 election, and the current state of human rights in country.
