Water in Tunisia: Challenges and Innovative Solutions
The "Water in Tunisia: Challenges and Innovative Solutions" seminar, held on October 26-27 in partnership with Oxyène Messadine Association in Sousse, brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to address the pressing issues surrounding water resources in Tunisia.
The seminar kicked off with a presentation on the current situation of water resources in Sousse, highlighting the challenges posed by water scarcity and climate change. This was followed by a presentation by the Director of the National Office for Water and Sanitation (SONED), who emphasized the need for efficient water management and conservation in the face of climate change and water scarcity.
The importance of water security and food security was also discussed, with a focus on the need for an integrated approach to water management that takes into account the needs of both agriculture and industry. The Coordinator of the Tunisian Forum for Development and Solidarity (FTDES) presented on the main challenges related to water law in Tunisia, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to water management that considers the needs of all stakeholders.
The first day concluded with a panel discussion on the Water Code in Tunisia, focusing on the current legal framework and the need for reform, as well as the challenges of implementation and necessary reforms.
The second day began with a presentation on recent techniques for adapting agricultural systems to water tensions, highlighting the importance of water conservation in agriculture and the need for more efficient use of water resources. A responsible for development at the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production (CSFPA) discussed the potential of hydroponics to reduce water consumption and increase crop yields.
Advances in wastewater treatment technology were also presented, emphasizing the importance of wastewater treatment and the need for more efficient and sustainable solutions. The President of the Association for the Development of Renewable Energy and Modernization of Agriculture (AREMS) discussed the role of AREMS in promoting sustainable agriculture and water management, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between researchers, companies, and public authorities to promote sustainable development.
The seminar concluded with a panel discussion on innovative technologies and sustainable water management, focusing on emerging technologies and their adoption in Tunisia, as well as the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to promote sustainable water management.
