Azareena Abdul Aziz
In Malaysia, a country with a predominantly Muslim population, discrimination towards women is rooted in archaic laws. Azareena Abdul Aziz of the Sisters in Islam unwaveringly fights towards a fair and equal treatment of women.
Eena is the Program Manager for Outreach and Empowerment of the Sisters in Islam (SIS), a non-governmental organization working in the area of the rights of Muslim women within the framework of Islam. Her work includes organizing activities around the Islamic Family Law, child marriage, domestic violence, freedom of religion and others. In order to improve women’s rights, she engages with different stakeholders at all levels, from grassroots and youth projects over artists to parliamentarians.
She also coordinates Gabungan Hak Wanita Islam (GAHWI), a coalition of Muslim women in Malaysia that advocates gender equality and justice, calling for Islamic Family Law reform in the country.
